Joon No's Taekwondo Lajust EIDSS Open Championships 12 October 2008
On Sunday 12th October over 140 Taekwondo competitors from 9 Clubs took over the gymnasium of Bulleen’s Veneto Club. It was the 2nd competition hosted by Joon No’s Taekwondo adopting WTF Approved LaJUST Electronic Protectors. It was a resounding success, with number of competitors doubling the 1st competition held in May 08.
The interclub sparring competition pitted junior competitors from ages 7-17 and seniors in closely monitored bouts of 2 to 3 rounds
Grandmaster Joon No of Joon No’s Taekwondo said “Taekwondo teaches courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and the indomitable spirit. All these characteristics were on display here today. We have had young kids just starting out and older black belt teenagers and seniors. Each of them gave their all.”
Taekwondo has recently entered the electronic age with competitors wearing special electronic scoring protectors. The protectors are designed to register blows without the need for a referee to make a call. WTF has recently announced that the electronic protector system will be used in the 2012 London Olympics. WTF also plans to introduce the electronic protector system at the next WTF World Taekwondo Championships scheduled for October 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Grandmaster No said that he had been waiting 20 years for this development, “Athletes will need to be more precise with their kicking, I firmly believe that this system will be fairer and will deliver better athletes. The athlete will now be able to focus on technical skills of the sport and less on the vagaries of scoring.”
