Victorian State Championships August 2009

A relatively small team of JNT athletes competed in the Victorian Selection Championships on Saturday August 1st and Sunday August 2nd at the State Netball & Hockey Centre. Many of our senior team members are competing in the Selections for World Taekwondo Championships in late August, and decided not to risk injury by competing in the Victorian Selection Championships. Despite the frustrations of the manual scoring system 86% of our athletes won medals, with 38% winning gold medals. Perhaps the highlight of day 2 of the competition, the Black Belt competition, was the courageous gold medal fight of Janelle Hocking. Four points down after some controversial point scoring, Janelle fought her way back to even the score at the end of the third round and move into a sudden death 4th round. With the match still tied at the end of the sudden death round Janelle was awarded the gold medal based on her attacking approach to the fight. Throughout the fight Janelle remained focused and more importantly, never gave up. Congratulations Janelle, your victory was truly inspirational. Congratulations to all our medal winners, who are now eligible to compete for Victoria at the National Taekwondo Championships to be held in Brisbane in October.

A small but dedicated JNT Poomsae Team competed at the Victorian State Poomsae Selection Championships on August 8th (Seniors) and August 22nd (Juniors). This competition was a return to the old format where judges sit at a table at the front of the court and deduct points when they feel the competitor has made a mistake. This can lead to some unexpected results that can be very frustrating for the competitors. Despite this our poomsae team performed very well with every team member winning a medal. Congratulations to all the medal winners.

Victorian State Championships May 2009

On 16th and 17th of May Tiger Team members traveled to the State Netball & Hockey Centre to compete in Victorian State Sparring Championships. Competitors from all over Victoria and Interstate participate in these tournaments to gain valuable competition experience. Stand out performer on the day was Michael Metaxatos who maintained his unbeaten record from the March State Championships by demolishing all his opponents in a convincing manner. Congratulations to all the medal winners listed below*.

On May 30, 2009 a small poomsae team competed in the Victorian State Poomsae Championships held at the State Netball & Hockey Centre. For the individual pooomsae, Taekwondo Victoria were again trialing the international poomsae format with a competition draw similar to sparring. During this competition, two competitors performed their poomsae patterns at the same time and the 3 to 5 judges positioned around the court held up a red or blue flag to decide who won. The winners then proceeded through to the next round until there were only two competitors left to compete for the gold medal. This poomsae format results in a much fairer transparent competition, which was reflected in the teams medal tally. Only one competitor missed out on a medal in the individual poomsae, which was due to the fact that the 2nd black belt pattern Geumgang is difficult to do with a broken foot.

Congratulations to all the medal winners.

Victorian State Championships Mar 2009

On Saturday March 14th and Sunday March 15 a small number of Tiger Team members competed in the Victorian Junior Sparring Championships. Despite the controversy with the point scoring, (using the manual scoring system) our JNT athletes performed very well with half winning gold medals.

Congratulations to all our medal winners for their outstanding performances.
